“The Peace Arch is a monument situated on the Canad-United States border between the communities of Blaine, Washington and Surrey, British Columbia. The Peace Arch, which stands 20.5 metres (67 ft) tall, was built by Sam Hill and dedicated in September 1921, and commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Gent in 1814. The monument is built on the exact United States-Canada boundary, between Interstate 5 and Highway 99,  in the grass median between the northbound and southbound lanes. The Peace Arch has the flags of the U.S. and Canada mounted on its crown, and two incriptions on both sides of its frieze. The inscription on the U.S. side of the Peace Arch reads “Children of a common mother”, and the words on the Canadian side read “Brethren dwelling together in unity”. Within the arch, each side has an iron gate hinged on either side of the border with an inscription above reading “May these gates never be closed.  Peace Arch Park consists of Peace Arch Provincial Park on the Canadian side and Peace Arch State Park on the American side of the border. Within the park is a major border crossing (between Interstate 5 on the U.S. side and British Columbia Highway 99 on the Canadian side) which has never closed, symbolizing a long history of peace between the two nations. In Canada, the crossing is officially named Douglas in honour of Sir James Douglas, the first governor of the Colony of British Columbia. Because of the Peace Arch monument, however, the border crossing between Surrey and Blaine is popularly known as the “Peace Arch Border Crossing”, one of the busiest border crossings between Canada and the United States. It is the busiest such crossing west of Detroit.”  Wikipedia

I took my Grandson to see the border crossing . . . and get a few pics.  We found the actual border marker, so he stood on the US side trying to look really cool, while I stood on the Canadian side.  I poked him trying to get him to smile . . . but cool guys don’t smile!

“I believe things happen that can’t be explained, but so many people seem intent on explaining them. Everyone has an answer for them. Either aliens or things from the spirit world.”  Harold Ramis

I shot my reflection in the window glass of my husbands truck canopy.  I had my 50mm 1.8 lens mounted with a 12mm macro extension tube – hence the very fuzzy shadowy outline.  I played with all the sliders in Lightroom to really bring out the lights and darks, then added a few textures and effects in Lightroom.  It looks very “otherworldly” . . .

My Sister and her Husband bought a nice shiny new Motor Home . . . as they spend half the year on the road travelling.  I just can’t help but ponder how far we’ve come . . . as I remember my parents and all seven of us kids packed in to a Ford Econoline Van camping our way across Canada from Ontario to BC and back.  The idea of travelling in a house on wheels with all the comforts of home . . . not even considered.  Yes indeed – we have come a long way . . .

“Gag me with a spoon!”  Moon Unit Zappa

I’ve been collecting spoons since a young age . . . still have my baby spoon!  Nothing special today – just my reflection in the spoon case I got this past Christmas.  It’s full already . . . and I only collect spoons from places I have physically been.  I have one more case just like this . . . I hope to collect many more from around the world in the coming years.  I’ve not been off the North American continent (except for Hawaii).  Lots of adventures to come!

Well – our fun Easter Weekend had to end at some point!  Easter Bunny pictures on Friday, Easter Egg decorating on Saturday morning, Easter Egg Hunt in the yard on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon, Campfire and marshmallow roast on Saturday evening, and tons of outdoor playtime and yummy Easter Dinner on Sunday with lots of family. Here we are waiting to say goodbye to my son who is headed back to Oregon with my 4 yr old granddaughter.  She said to her Mom and Dad “I don’t want to go home to Oregon.  I want to live here with Grandma!  You can come visit me anytime!”  Bless her beautiful little heart!  Meanwhile, the kids were playing street hockey in the driveway while we were “stalling” on saying our goodbyes . . .

“Well, I’m using a cane, so what? So what if they shot me sitting in a wheelchair? That’s life!” Dick Clark

I flew in to Oakland Airport this morning for a week long visit with my kids and grandkids.  As I was waiting for my ride, who was stuck in traffic, I spotted this line of folded wheelchairs chained up at one of the exits.  Couldn’t resist using it as part of our “chair” themed week in the MTM Challenge.  What a gorgeous day it is here – nice change from the cold, and rain back home.  My 365’s this week will be full of my beautiful grandkids you can be sure!

“It was a great surprise to me when I discovered that most of the ugliness I saw in others, was but a reflection of my own nature.” – Unknown

Tonight I am packing for a week-long trip to visit my Kids and Grandkids.  As I was busy to-ing and fro-ing I noticed my warped reflection in the living room windows and thus had to snap this picture.  It certainly is how I feel somedays!  I think this photo is a good reminder for me to always be “checking” for a warped perspective in any given situation . . . so easy to fall prey to old habits and experiences . . .

“A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.”  Herm Albright

My 92 year old Mother-in-Law fell and broke her hip on January 24th.  Luckily it was not a severe break, just a hairline fracture that they were able to reinforce with just a few screws.  She has been on the Rehab floor in hospital for two weeks now working on getting stronger and more stable on her feet. It has been a challenge, for her and for us.  I am at hospital every day with her – sometimes for just a few hours and other days all day long.  Each day seems to come with new/different challenges that we must work through.  Most recently was the issue of the Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist wanting to move her out of hospital within the next few days.  We do not believe she is readyfor discharge as she is still quite weak and unsteady.  She’s making improvements every day – however it’s just too soon.  Her biggest obstacle is her own brain.  She has a huge fear of falling again, so she over-analyzes everything to the point that everything takes huge effort.  Yesterday, we were finally able to sit with the different entities involved in her care. We now have an agreement in place that will keep her in hospital thru Feb 29th, at which point she will be re-assessed.  If we – as a group – decide that she is not ready to go home – we will transition her to a Convalescent Care facility in the community.

Now that we have this plan in place . . . I am amazed at the transformation in my MIL!  This morning she was eager to get up and walk, and even wanted me to take her in to the gym to work out! (No Physio on the weekend tho).  She does NOT want to go in to a facility – she wants to go home!  It was nice to see the positive energy she exuded this morning – now to just channel that energy in the right way.  Today’s photo is of she and I on our walk around the rehab unit this morning . . . I caught our reflection in the metal shield on one of the doors as we walked by, with my husband’s iPhone4.

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” George Bernard Shaw

My husband just built me a new tickety-boo shower with a big 12 inch rainhead, three smaller rainheads, two handheld shower heads and six shower sprays.  A bit overboard you might say?  Well –  that’s the way he does things . . . only the best!  Of course I love using the 12 inch rainhead . . . it is awesome!  It’s a long cry from the outside shower my dad built at our homestead up in the interior of BC – a 50 gallon drum with a shower spray on it.  We had to haul water up from the creek and boil it on the fire, then dump in the barrel and haul the barrel up the tree.  I’ve come a long way baby . . .
