“We are told to let our light shine, and if it does, we won’t need to tell anybody it does.  Lighthouses don’t fire cannons to call attention to their shining – they just shine.”  Dwight L. Moody

Lighthouses are one of my very favorite places to visit.

There is just something about this lone sentry sitting on it’s rocky promontory, strong, silent and steady – shining a light far out to sea to steer ships clear of the dangerous rocky shores.

This one sits on the Oregon Coastline – the Umpqua Lighthouse.  It has been raining all day, and I captured this shot just before dusk.  It’s completely overcast, so no chance of a sunset today.

Let YOUR light shine on!

“Know what you want to do, hold the thought firmly, and do every day what should be done, and every sunset will see you that much nearer the goal.”  Elbert Hubbard

We’ve had so much rain lately, it was pure pleasure to see such a stunningly gorgeous sunset tonight!  Every year on our visits to Kauai, we make it a point to have dinner at a wonderful restaurant in Poipu called Beach House Restaurant.  They have the best seafood that I’ve eaten just about anywhere.  I particularly love their Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi.  Yum!  We were fortunate enough to get a “front row seat” with an unobstructed view of the sunset.  I set the camera on our table on self timer and took this shot of us looking in to the sunset.  Just a beautiful memorable moment for us.  And a great way to round out this really wonderful trip.  We head back to San Francisco Bay Area on Saturday so our time here is quickly winding down.

Aloha!

“Happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present.”  Jim Rohn

We’re down to our last week on the Island.  It’s amazing to think that we’ve been here two and a half weeks already!  How wonderful it has been to not have an agenda when we get up in the morning.  We have our list of things we wanted to do this trip, and we’ve been ticking them off slowly but surely.  There have been days we’ve been on the go from sunrise till way past sunset.  Other days, we’re just out and about leisurely exploring and discovering and experiencing, as much as we can, what the Island has to offer.  A few times we’ve just stayed “in”, lounging around the pool, soaking in the hot tub, taking naps.

We’ve been coming here every year since 2005.  Every year we seem to stay a little bit longer.  This year it seemed to take us a good two weeks to really relax and get in to the kicked back attitude of the Islands.  We are working while we’re here as well . . . so it’s not all play and no work.  But how can we complain – telecommuting from a place like this??  Having a good team back home is really enabling us to take this time for ourselves.  Being able to spend this time away together is something many people only dream about doing.

We’ve turned our dream in to a reality.

This is the view from our Villa. Can you find us in the photo?)

“Learn from the past, set vivid, detailed goals for the future, and live in the only moment of time over which you have any control: now.”  Denis Waitley

I took this shot from the beach at Hanalei Pier as the sun was setting over the Bali Hai Mountains (taken from the movie South Pacific which was filmed just north of here).  Such a beautiful and serene shot.  I had been playing around most of the afternoon with slow shutter speed shots under the pier.  When I finally popped out to see what Glen was up to – this is the scene I captured.

Kind of takes your breath away eh?  And gives a person pause to think about where you are in life, where you’ve come from, where you are going . . . I have huge respect for the fact that the answer to those questions is different for each and every one of us.  For me what I know for sure is that every experience I’ve had in my life has created the person I am today.

I am grateful for every one of those moments, good or bad.  I am determined going forward that in my experience of life . . . I am leaving positive footprints for others to follow, and leaving a trail of positive energy for others to be inspired as well.

“Sensual pleasures have the fleeting brilliance of a comet; a happy marriage has the tranquility of a lovely sunset.”

I love this particular photo because, as the above quote states, a happy marriage has the tranquility of a lovely sunset.  I feel like that is where we are in our relationship these days – tranquil and happy.  Not to say that we don’t have a few issues crop up now and then, but we know it’s safe to work through the issues without worry that one of us is going to walk away.

I love the feeling of walking hand in hand, side by side, with my best friend – exploring, adventuring, loving, living and sharing.

This photo was taken at sunset on Ke’e Beach at The End of The Road, Kauai, HI.

“We’re crazy about this city.  First time we came here, we walked the streets all day, all over town and nobody hassled us… Los Angeles?  That’s just a big parking lot where you buy a hamburger for the trip to San Francisco.” – John Lennon

I left my heart in San Francisco . . . there truly is something about this city that draws one back to it over and over again.  It is a beautiful city – one I love to visit but care not to live in.  That’s because I’m just not a city girl.  I’m a country girl at heart – but love the lights and the history of this golden city.  I know it fairly well as I lived in the Bay Area for many years.  On this particular day, hubby and I were out and about looking to shoot the sunset.  We drove up in to the Oakland Hills, but were un-inspired.  The sun was still above the horizon when we decided to dash the 1/2 hour to Treasure Island.  It was well worth the effort.  I think it must be one of the best vantage points for photographing the lights of San Francisco.  We were a bit late for the good sunset shots . . . but this one I liked with the lights so crisp.  That’s my shadow as I was attempting to get in to the shot.  I had to clamber over some rather large boulders on the water’s edge . . . and finally just gave up and accepted this as my 365 shot.

On the Ferry headed home from Vancouver Island.  That’s Vancouver Island in the distance with a very pretty sunset.  It’s been a stormy, cold and wet week so it was a treat to see the sun setting over the Island.  I processed this in HDR using Photomatix and Photoshop CS6.
